# Terms 5 and 6 – Computing Theory In this unit you will learn how computers work.  You will learn about what is inside a typical computer.  You will learn what different types of software exist and what features they have.  You will find out what binary numbers are and why computers use binary.  You will be able to do simple binary arithmetic and convert numbers from binary to denary and from denary to binary.  You will examine the most common logic gates (NOT, OR, AND) and be able to solve problems with them.  You will look at how computers communicate over networks.

# Lessons 1 to 3 – Hardware and Software

Learning Objectives To name, explain and understand various pieces of computing hardware To name, explain and understand various pieces of computing software Learning Outcomes All must – print out a list of short definitions for the five keywords.  Complete both presentations.  The presentations will have short answers, sometimes lacking details and the presentations will be […]

# Lesson 4 – Binary to Denary

Learning Objectives Understand that computers are digital devices so they use the binary number system Be able to convert a binary number to a denary number Learning Outcomes All must know that computers are digital and this means that they have to use binary numbers to store information.  With lots of help, can convert a few […]

# Lesson 5 – Denary to Binary

Learning Objectives Understand that computers are digital devices so they use the binary number system Be able to convert a denary number to a binary number Learning Outcomes All must know that computers are digital and this means that they have to use binary numbers to store information.  With lots of help, can convert a few […]

# Lesson 6 – Binary Addition

Learning Objectives Understand that computers are digital devices so they use the binary number system Be able to add together two binary numbers Learning Outcomes All must know that computers are digital and this means that they have to use binary numbers to store information.  With lots of help, add together two binary numbers. (Level […]

# Lesson 7 – Hexadecimal Numbers

Learning Objectives Understand what hexadecimal numbers are and how to convert to and from binary. Understand that whilst computers use binary, it is easier for humans to use hexadecimal to represent the numbers used by a computer Learning Outcomes All must try out HTML hex colour codes to see how hex is used in real life.  With […]
