Words to learn: copyright, licence
Have you ever written a story? Written or recorded some music or a film? Written a computer program or game? Then you might be interested in copyright.
Watch this video which introduces what copyright is:
So as you can see, if you create an original piece of work, you can dictate who can use it and how much they have to pay. If people breach copyright by illegally copying copyrighted materials, they can be sued or even (in some circumstances) end up going to prison!
Most copyrighted pieces of work are licensed – this means that you can use them in certain circumstances. Computer games and software often use Digital Rights Management (DRM). Watch the video below which explains the concept of licences and DRM:
There are lots of different types of licence. These include:
- Public Domain
- Creative Commons
- Open Source
- Closed Source/Commercial
Does everyone respect copyright law? No! You might have heard the phrase piracy. We don’t mean this:
A copyright pirate is someone who distributes copyrighted materials to other people, either for free or to make money. The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act makes this a criminal offence.
Your task is to create a presentation (using Google Slides) that will tell people about copyright and piracy. It must include the following information:
- What copyright is
- What a licence is
- What the following types of licence let you do:
- What piracy is
- What punishments there are in the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act for distributing copyrighted material
- Who FAST are and what they do
Your presentation should look professional – this means not cramming too much onto one slide, careful choice of colours, good font selection and an appropriate selection of images – not too many and not pixellated.
Before the end of the lesson, you need to share your file with your teacher. You can do this by pressing the blue “Share” button at the top right hand side of the screen, entering your teacher’s name and pressing Done. This will then allow your teacher to see the file.
