Starter

You will be given a username (which is 5 numbers long, starting with a 9) and a password.  This will allow you to log in to the school’s computer network.  The first time you login you will be asked to change your password to something you will remember.

Write your username and password in the inside front cover of your planner.  You will also need to write down your school email address.  It is:

username@students.belperschool.co.uk

Replace username with your actual username – for example if your username is 98123 then your email address would be 98123@students.belperschool.co.uk

Main – The Acceptable Usage Policy

At Belper School, when we use computer rooms there are a set of rules that all students (and staff) have to follow.  This is called the Acceptable Usage Policy and by using a computing room you agree to follow these rules.

Open this presentation – your teacher will go through each of the rules.

Main – Understanding where work is saved

It is important to understand where your work is saved and how to keep it organised.  Go to the Start Menu and choose My Computer.

You will see a screen like the one below:

mycomputer

Your H: drive will have your username next to it – H stands for Home.  This is your own personal area that you can use to save files to.

There is an O: drive – you can ignore this, this drive stores program files which cannot be used directly.

There is also a Q: drive called studentshared.  This is sometimes used by teachers when you are working in groups.  Do not keep your own files on the Q: drive as it is often cleared by the IT Technicians and the files cannot be recovered.

Double click on your H: drive.  You will see some folders already exist.  Create a folder for each of the subjects you are taught (you might want to look at your timetable to see what subjects you have).

Main – Using your email account

The school provides you with an email account that you can use for schoolwork only.  Your email address is:

username@students.belperschool.co.uk

Replace username with your username – for example, if your username is 94123 then your email address would be 94123@students.belperschool.co.uk

To log in to your email, click the house icon in your web browser and choose “Email” from the list.  You can also access it directly by going to http://google.belperschool.co.uk

For security reasons you will be asked to type in your username and password again.  Your teacher will show you what you can do with your email account and how it all works.

Main – Using Google Classroom

Your teacher will show you how to use the Google Classroom system.  This allows your teacher to electronically set and mark work online – no more sticking things in books, no more losing your homework!
